One of the UK’s leading bespoke furniture manufacturers is upgrading its end-to-end manufacturing capabilities with the help of a KUKA robot<\/a>. The Jali factory in Kent has installed the 7-axis, 100kg payload KR100 model in an automated production cell. It has a flexible end effector that can hold the wide variety of tools required for the different finishing processes.
\nThe company’s high-tech design and manufacturing system was built by managing director Nicholas Showan, and the investment in automation marked its next level.
\nTo create a solution that matched his lean manufacturing philosophy, Nicholas, an experienced engineer who founded Barham’s award-winning company in 1990, enlisted the support of Halesowen-based KUKA Automation<\/a> + Robotics.
\nHe asked for help in designing a solution that would fit his lean manufacturing philosophy. “I presented my ideas to several robotics companies, but KUKA<\/a> was the most interested to hear them. Everyone involved in the project went out of their way to help, he said.
\nIn order to develop an efficient, low-cost production operation, from order placement to shipping, Nicholas has already equipped the factory with a variety of automated machinery that is connected to an advanced online product design system.
\nUnlike other options, the factory was able to tackle future projects in a time- and space-saving way by manufacturing parts of different sizes and materials with speed, precision and detail.
\nThe ratio of productivity to manpower at Jali is one of the best in the industry. If we take advantage of automation instead of outdated production techniques, I believe we can make more progress, according to Nicholas. A robotic pick and place application for a panel position racking system may be among the future automation technologies he hopes to invest in.
