Robot-prepared foods have been around for many years, but haven’t been as successful as investors expected. Given that the current pandemic situation mandates social distancing and personal hygiene practices, KFC has implemented a new way of contactless food serving.

As COVID-19 infections increase, implementing a solution that promotes social distancing makes the idea of robotic automation in the food industry very feasible and effective. Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) has become of the many food industries that are incorporating robotic automation into their processes.

Read on to learn more about KFC’s classic business success strategy amidst the COVID-19!

How Does the Robotic Fast Food Service Work?

KFC gives customers a different and much more hygienic experience. They allow customers to place their orders through a digital self-service interface. After ordering, the kitchen staff places the food on the conveyor belt and then transfers the conveyor belt to the FANUC LR Mate 200iD robotic arm.

The robotic arm then travels its own path, placing the food in a closed compartment, and the customer must enter the correct password when placing the order. When the customer enters the password on the touch screen, a closed compartment containing the order is unlocked and the customer withdraws their order.

The LR Mate 200iD is one of the smallest and lightest compact-size 6-axis FANUC robots that offer great precision and high speed in processes.

Benefits of Automated Process Integration

Although the order is still being prepared and classified by people who comply with biosafety standards (masks, gloves, etc.), the robotic automation ensures contactless serving in close physical proximity or meeting the customer at the time of the delivery. In addition, customers can use a bank card or a biometric system for payment.

AKFC representative Dmitry Ageev said,“The company built the new store before the coronavirus outbreak made its methods a hygienic way of ordering food. Pandemic alarms are forcing food service establishments such as restaurants to generate fewer points of human contact in food establishments. This automation is not very economical. However, owners of large chains of food establishments may take into account that the cost of implementing more technologies generates a positive impact not only on profits and business development but also on the health and reliability of their customers.”
