History of Robotics in the Automotive Industry

From industrial use to space, robots have come a long way. With their high precision, endurance and speed, robots are now a big part of the future.

What is even more interesting to note is the timeline that follows this process. The incredible jumps from one breakthrough to another are something to be appreciated.

From simply being arms used to perform repetitive tasks, robots are now nearly at a place where they can think for themselves.

While it was fascinating enough that this machine could carry out functions that humans erred in more efficiently, it continued to grow. With more sensors, advanced applications, and complex programming they are rivaling humans in the labor workforce.

Automation truly boomed in the U.S in the 1970s, after WWII accelerated the demand for more advanced machines leading eventually to the making of robotic arms such as the Stanford Arm which continued to advance with more and more innovation. With the modern industrial robots gaining popularity, robots eventually made it into more complex jobs such as painting, grinding and spray application.

By the middle 1970s, industrial robots continued to grow at fast rate. We saw the Silver Arm that worked from touch and used pressure sensors to perform multiple small part assembly jobs and controlled by a mini computer.

1975 gave us the world’s first fully electrically driven robot and 1979 brought the first generation of welding robots that revolutionalized the automobile industry!

Once the large companies started investing in this new innovation, there followed some disasters with robots wreaking havoc and caused a dip in the market for robots. This financial instability was compensated in mid 1980s but at this point, Japanese and European companies took over the robotics market.

The robotic arms got more efficient and became faster and the world witnessed the prototype of an intelligent robot by FANUC in 1992.

2010 bought us exciting new innovations such as the KUKA self mounted Robots that takes care of multiple tasks at once. Another popular innovation in 2011 that changed a whole industry was the Robonaut that was launched into the international space station. It was the first robot humanoid and has since then gone through more advances.

Along came with innovation an acceleration of demands which eventually lead to a 29% increase in sales in 2014 across the world. And today robots are an integral part of the manufacturing world and will continue to bring revolutionalizing possibilities to the automotive industry.

Based in Spain, we are a company that is passionate about all things Robots. And this is why we offer comprehensive repair and resale services.
