Robot Fun Facts Part II

If the previous set of facts (in Robot Fun Facts Part I) wowed you, we have great news for you – the fun is not over yet. Get ready for another dose of mind-blowing facts:

  • Founder of Carnegie Mellon’s Robotics Institute, Hans Moravec predicted that by 2040, robots will emerge as a species on their own. That is some weird prophecy, let’s just hope robots and humans can live together in complete harmony.
  • The Mie University and NEC System Technologies in Japan made the world’s first Sommelier Robot. This bot had the ability to identify different wines, hors d’oeuvres, and even cheeses. How awesome is that!
  • The Australian researchers are working on creating a micro robot that has the capability to ‘swim’ like bacteria through human arteries.
  • The word ‘Robot’ originated from robota – a Czech word that means ‘hard work’ or ‘drudgery’. It was first used in 1921, in a play named Rossum’s Universal Robots (R.U.R)
  • Want proof that humans are still smarter than robots? Here’s one: The U.S. military robots that were sent to scout out the Taliban hideout caves in Afghanistan were rendered useless. How? The Taliban made use of ladders to flip them over and disable them. TADA!
  • Out of the entire robot population of the world, more than half of them can be found in Japan alone.
  • In 1495, Leonardo Da Vinci drew up an armored humanoid machine plan. Keeping that plan as a model, modern engineer Mark Rosheim created a functional minuscule version for NASA. The robot is supposed to help us colonize Mars. We don’t know about you but we just had multiple nerdgasms.
  • Let’s travel back to Plato’s time, because his pal Archytas of Tarentum is accredited with the invention of a mechanical bird that can be argued to be the first ever robot created. The bird was driven by a spurt of compressed air or steam – oh, and it was back in the 5th century B.C.
  • Nanobots are the smallest robots in the world. To call them tiny would be better because these bots measure less than a thousandth of a millimeter! Yes, that is only 10 nanometers to be precise.

There you have it! We hope you had as much fun reading these fun facts as we had compiling them for you.
