THE INDUSTRIAL ROBOTIC ARM THAT CAN MANIPULATE DIFFERENT OBJECTS TO HELP EMPLOYEES AT AMAZON

Leading online retailer Amazon has unveiled a new industrial robotic arm capable of handling millions of different objects. It calls it the Sparrow robot, a new intelligent robotic device that speeds up the fulfilment process by moving individual products before they are packed, an important step towards cutting-edge technology and helping our workers.
With considerable investments in robots and cutting-edge technology made within its operations over the past ten years, Amazon has remained at the forefront of innovation.

The company’s committed teams of specialists, engineers, software developers and other professionals have been working to create solutions that have enabled Amazon to automate essential skills, such as the way it transports, handles, sorts, recognises and stores things. Before products are packed for transport to customers, a crucial step in Amazon’s fulfilment process takes place. Technologically advanced equipment transfers containers to workers who pick the goods to be packed.

Once the goods are packed, Amazon’s existing robotic arms, such as Robin and Cardinal, which has just debuted, can redirect packages to different areas of the warehouse before they begin their delivery journey. According to Amazon, the company’s focus on robots has given us the opportunity to do more research and development to be able to handle certain products. The world’s largest online retailer has millions of items of different sizes and shapes in its inventory, so it saw an opportunity to develop new technology that could handle them on a scale comparable to Amazon. The company can transmit packages electronically to various points in the warehouse before they embark on their journey.

Sparrow is the first robot in Amazon’s warehouses capable of recognising, picking and handling specific products in its inventory, and the company claims that Sparrow “significantly increases item handling in our operations”.

According to Amazon, Sparrow represents a major advance in the field of industrial robotics. Sparrow can detect and handle millions of things thanks to computer vision and artificial intelligence.

Amazon is unlikely to offer its robots for sale or supply them to other companies, it says. Amazon can work more efficiently and safely using robotic technology rather than more work.
