Tracepen: A Flexible Innovation for Industrial Robots

Research, developments, and significant improvements are daily in everyday automation systems applied in current manufacturing have made it more flexible, adaptable, and profitable.

Among the facilities of the new developments we find. The TracePen is an intelligent device to instruct industrial robots reducing costs.

Wandelbots is a German startup that enables non-programmers to teach industrial robots faster and cheaper and with high precision. Founded in 2017

Wandelbots, based in Dresden, Germany, designed the TracePen device solution. It is the world’s first portable ‘no-code’ device that enables humans to teach robots how to perform industrial tasks.

The TracePen is up to 70 times faster and a fraction of the cost compared to regular programming methods.

How the TracePen Works

Programming the TracePen in the form of a pencil easily and quickly programs a specific function in a short time with robots from the brands Kuka, Universal Robots, ABB, Denso, and Fanuc.

The device rests on a support adapted to the robot after being calibrated. Human labour is in charge of inserting the chosen tool. The operator then takes the TracePen and illustrates the tasks that the machine must learn.

The movements that are carried out are registered in an application already determined on the tablet, allowing the operator to make the necessary corrections and then execute the precise process, automatically generating code in the robot’s programming language.

The processes in which this new automation solution has been successfully tested are deburring, Pick & Place, inspection, polishing, welding, and joining.

In the preparation phase is the grinding, screwing, painting and surface processes.

TracePen is primarily characterized by easy tool and system integration and highly accurate offline simulation and monitoring. It has other qualities such as visual programming, joint control, program tracking, and essential frame adjustment.

Christian Piechnick, founder and CEO of Wandelbots, stated. “The complexity, time, and cost of programming robots to adapt to changing market requirements have, until now, been enormously prohibitive.”

“The advent of end-user programming has upended the market.”

In the Wandelbots training technology platform for robots without code, it is possible to instruct, reprogram, and supply data to different types of robots in minimum time. It allows those who are not programmers, to teach specific and precision tasks to industrial robots and program them easily and intuitively, providing flexible and economical equipment.
