ABB’S RobotStudio Offers a New Precision Feature for Calculating Robot Braking Distances to Optimize Safety

The new stopping distance function included in ABB’s RobotStudio offline programming and simulation software aims to accurately simulate the stopping distance of the robot in real time.

The Need for a New Precision Feature

By accurately calculating the robot’s stopping distance, this feature overcomes the need to increase the margin of safety in cell design, thus saving up to 25% of space. To facilitate the change in stopping distance, the robot cell designed by specialists is often too large to allow additional movement when the robot stops, making inefficient use of space.

RobotStudio with its new skill uses ABB’s excellent motion control technology to predict the robot’s motion more accurately. In this way, the precise movement of the robot can be simulated, so that the user can pinpoint the correct size of the required safety area and the ideal position of the function, including optical safety mechanisms, guardrails and controller.

RobotStudio’s Precision Feature and Its Uses

Robot position data can be used to size specific areas by slowing down or stopping, depending on the operator’s location. This is particularly useful in collaborative applications, where the operator must ensure that the robot has stopped before approaching. The data used for this purpose is obtained from ABB’s SafeMove software.

ABB Robotics Head of Product Management Antti Matinlauri gave his opinion.

“Our new robot stopping distance feature for RobotStudio equips the user with information about a robot’s movements in the real world with an unprecedented level of precision.”

How It Will Help

Predicting the braking action of a robotic equipment by taking into account its load capacity will help to save costs and time for integrators and end users. They’ll be able to achieve a robotic cell design where a security zone can be established, with a space reduction of up to 25%.

It will allow industries to improve functionality and obtain automated solutions that favor processes.

This new virtual robot stopping distance feature is available in RobotStudio for download.
