The Disney Research Institute and Researchers at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich have created RobotSculptor to train robots to sculpt clay. They have complete robotics and artificial intelligence programs. Recent publications show that they are developing new functions for robots: emotional communication, sculpting clay and making metal shapes.
The experts have been utilizing advanced and innovative robotic technology for various manufacturing process applications. Now, Disney has developed a robot that can sculpt clay. And the latest development from Disney’s research department is the robot sculpture.
Read on to learn more about this fascinating robotic invention!
How Does the RobotSculptor Work?
RobotSculptor uses a six-axis robotic arm and software-controlled custom sculpting tool that allows the artist to first load the 3D model on screen. Then it starts generating an image on the clay and defines the exterior of the final sculpture. After an initial model is designed, the robot initiates precise movements for sculpting.
The robot uses an interactive design system that allows users to create sculpture patterns and make clay models using a standard 6-axis robotic arm. Since it handles a common lattice as input, the user can select the grid process multiple times through analysis. This allows them to fit the design expression on a set of initial tool-path by altering and setting important parameters.
Using RobotSculptor, users can choose from different styles of sculpture.
Testing and Trial Phase
The parameters obtained after analysis and design controls are backed by intense research and design testing. This phase utilizes a custom cycle tool to cut water-based clay materials.
Subsequently, the original tool path reaches the system’s optimization component for optimal tool path planning. This allows the user to find the robot’s engraving movement that matches the target surface with improved feasibility and productivity.
This new system has demonstrated the versatility of the designing technique by creating unique styles of sculptures with multiple clay specimens. Robotic tools have become strong allies for the entertainment industry especially in the creation of large-scale figures in different sizes and materials.
