KMR IISY CR: Redefining autonomous robotics in cleanrooms

Industry 4.0 demands increasingly specialized and efficient solutions, especially in critical environments like cleanrooms. In this context, KUKA Robotics has taken a significant leap forward with its latest innovation: the KMR iisy CR. This autonomous mobile robot (AMR) not only sets new standards in all-terrain robotics but also redefines automation in ultra-clean environments such as semiconductor manufacturing.

The KMR iisy CR, capable of handling payloads between 11 and 15 kilograms, combines an independent mobile platform with a six-axis LBR iisy robotic arm. Its design has been carefully engineered to meet the stringent requirements of cleanroom operations. Its certification from the renowned Fraunhofer Institute confirms compliance with ISO Class 3 cleanroom standards according to DIN EN ISO 14644-1, underscoring its excellence in this domain.

Innovation in the Service of Precision

What sets the KMR iisy CR apart is its low-emission, low-particle design, along with its ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) certification. These features are essential for safeguarding sensitive components in semiconductor production and other areas of the electronics industry. The joints of its six axes are specifically designed to minimize particle emissions, and its construction using cleanroom-compatible materials ensures minimal release of gases such as ammonia or hydrocarbons. Its electrostatic discharge capability is certified under DIN EN 61340, providing vital protection for the most delicate products.

This robot isn’t just technologically advanced—it’s also highly practical. Installation is quick and straightforward, enabling it to perform tasks like pick-and-place, material transport, and palletizing in warehouses with unprecedented efficiency. Its ability to link multiple stations removes the constraints of traditional transport systems, making it easier to produce small batches profitably and switch rapidly between different products.

Integrated Ecosystem and Advanced Control

The mobility of the KMR iisy CR is managed by KUKA.AMR Fleet, an AI-based fleet management software, while the robotic arm runs on iiQKA.OS2, a scalable, adaptable, and cyberattack-resistant operating system that complies with the new ISO 10218 standard. This seamless integration of hardware and software—both developed by KUKA—ensures flawless coordination and optimal performance.

The robot is controlled via the KUKA smartPAD pro or the KUKA smartPLUG, which allows users to connect their own operating devices, such as tablets, via USB. The smartPAD pro, being flexible and detachable, enhances ergonomics and reduces costs for fleets with multiple AMRs.

Beyond Semiconductors

Although the KMR iisy CR is perfectly suited for semiconductor and electronic component manufacturing, its adaptability—including flexible retrofit options and the ability to integrate standardized interfaces—makes it ideal for producing E82 and E84 components in the semiconductor industry and valuable in other sectors as well. Cleanrooms are critical in industries like pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, healthcare, and food production, where the demand for robots that meet the highest cleanliness standards continues to grow. The KMR iisy CR is undoubtedly a trailblazer in automating these sensitive environments, reinforcing KUKA’s vision of smarter, cleaner, and more efficient industrial robotics for the era of Industry 4.0.
