FANUC M-20IA: PRECISION TESTING AT EUROBOTS BILBAO DEMONSTRATES EXACTING ENGINEERING STANDARDS

At URT’s facilities in Zamudio, near Bilbao (Vizcaya), a precision test was recently carried out on the Fanuc M-20iA robot as part of the company’s industrial robot reconditioning process. The goal was to verify and certify that this model meets the highest standards of repeatability, positioning accuracy, and load response—key factors in demanding industrial environments.

The Fanuc M-20iA is a six-axis articulated robot featuring a hollow upper arm and wrist, allowing internal routing of electrical and pneumatic lines. This design minimizes wear, prevents cable entanglement, and reduces unwanted vibrations during handling, loading/unloading, and light machining tasks.

With a maximum payload of 20 kg, a reach of approximately 1811–1813 mm, and a repeatability of ±0.08 mm, the M-20iA is well-suited for operations that require precision, speed, and payload capacity within moderately sized workspaces.

At URT, the precision test was carefully structured to simulate real-world conditions. It began with initial calibration, aligning all axes and reference points with no load. The robot then performed repeated closed-path movements to assess its ability to return to the same position from different orientations. A standard tool was mounted to simulate near-maximum payload, and further tests were conducted at varying speeds and accelerations to evaluate dynamic performance. Finally, after continuous operation to induce thermal stress, repeatability was rechecked to detect any deformation or drift.

The results were consistent and reassuring. Static repeatability without load measured between ±0.07 and ±0.09 mm, closely matching the nominal specification. With a near-maximum load, deviation increased slightly but remained within ±0.12 mm—well within acceptable limits for most industrial applications. Under fast movements and high acceleration, the robot showed a minor increase in error (up to ±0.15 mm), but typical industrial motions remained stable. Even after prolonged operation, no permanent deformation or significant drift was observed.

These tests are essential for companies that rely on fine assembly, tight-tolerance positioning, or high-cycle production environments. For tasks involving light machining, deburring, or multi-tool setups, even small deviations can impact final quality. The Fanuc M-20iA tested at URT proved to be a reliable and precise solution, reinforcing URT’s reputation as a trusted provider of refurbished, calibrated, and certified industrial robots.

For businesses seeking automation with guaranteed accuracy, the M-20iA stands out as a solid choice—especially when validated under real operating conditions, with actual tools, payloads, and speeds.
