YASKAWA AND ROBOTICS UPGRADES ALLOW FOR IMPROVED CONTROL AND HANDLING WITH LESS ENERGY INVESTMENT.

The demand for effective robotic solutions is increasing as a result of increased automation, adaptation to new labor-saving production processes, and the repercussions of Covid-19. This is especially true in industries where logistics is critical, such as food, medicine and cosmetics, where the need to improve efficiency by automating the packaging and stacking of individual items is greatest.

As seen in the Motoman-PL series, Yaskawa, an expert in robotics and motion management, continues to improve its line of Motoman robots to meet these demands. The Motoman-PL series adds four more palletizing robot alternatives to existing Yaskawa models, addressing lightweight palletizing applications as well as people who can handle larger and heavier items such as building materials.

Among these enhancements, the PL series robot controllers are compatible with the popular YRC1000 robot controller, allowing for faster setup and operation, as well as greater energy efficiency thanks to a power generation function. In addition, the two new PL versions (190 and 320) are easier to use, smaller and have a higher payload capacity than the previous MPL series.

When loading / unloading larger objects in industrial applications, the weight of the finished item can be compounded by heavy packaging, such as cardboard, which can easily break or deform if not handled carefully

These scenarios require a gentle grip as well as a powerful force, and air drive or suction is often the solution, although this requires larger, more intrusive pipes. Yaskawa used a large diameter hollow construction for the wrist shaft at the tip of the arm with the new PL models, avoiding the danger of interference with the peripheral and external equipment of the robotic tool.

This style also provides more room in the operation of the nozzle direction making it additionally versatile because it can be loaded to the optimal paddle size.

The YRC1000 mechanism controller, which is used in medium and large size robots, has better energy saving performance than other alternatives for the ability to regenerate operating energy created when the motor decelerates. Depending on the operating circumstances of each facility, this has been shown to reduce energy use by up to 30%. Also, because the controller and robot are connected by a single cable, users benefit from less wiring and therefore installation time.

Communication between the robot controller and the manipulator must be optimized for overall system performance and maintainability, and these new PL models provide capabilities to help with that. An error warning is displayed on the programming pendant when the communication connection within the manipulator is disconnected or an encoder error occurs for each axis servo motor, for example, simplifying problem location on the associated robot axis . Additionally, each part comes with a multiple serial port, allowing for faster restoration in case the communication line is lost.

Lastly, the Yaskawa palletizing application computer code, ‘MotoPal’, enables automatic production of operating programs for mechanisms simply by specifying conveyor and station location, product sizes and load patterns, and then downloading.
