4 Things We Couldn’t Do If We Didn’t Have Robots

The evolution of machines has resulted in a shared workload between industrial equipment and staff workers. Introduction of robots have further divided this work, promoting most of the staff to supervisory roles.

The precision and repeatability of applications performed by robots has a far greater value in competitive industries. Furthermore, multi-application adaptation enables them to perform a wide variety of tasks.

While human resource is always valued, advancement in robotic technologies has enabled us to reach to newer heights (and depths). A few industries may as well not be able to survive, or at least meet the demands, without the use of robotics.

1.    Car Production

Automobile industry is perhaps one of the oldest industries to use robots. Their mechanical arms, equipped with tools and sensors, are perfect to function in the assembly line. These robots enable the industry to save money in manufacturing costs as well as accurately perform some of the toughest jobs.

Car manufacturing has become a lot safe with involvement of robots, as workers no longer have to deal with dangerous jobs themselves. Furthermore, a wide range of tasks – installation, welding and painting – are now easier to get done. Higher efficiency has made these robots an integral of car production.

2.    Underwater Exploration

Robots capable of underwater performance have dramatically improved our knowledge of the ocean floor. These robots are able to dive deeper and for longer times than humans can, even with improved equipment.

Equipped with high-definition cameras, sensors and other technology, robots regularly assist scientists in exploring dams, ships, ocean floor and other underwater surfaces.

Commonly remote-operated vehicles (ROVs) are used today. These are controlled by humans from a commander center, gathering images and other data of underwater life.

3.    Fixing Oil Spills

In the last decade or two, we’ve seen a number of oil spills threatening to destroy the marine environment. However, small spills – if fixed underwater – can help avoid these huge environmental disasters.

Robots, more specifically, ROVs are currently being used to collect video footage and other relevant information to help engineers understand problems and intervene, when and where necessary.

The hydraulic arms of these robots have interchangeable tools which may be used upon intervention. ROVs patrol the site even after capping the spill in order to make sure that oil isn’t leaking anymore.

4.    Commercialized Agriculture

Even though farming has been done since the beginning of time, introduction of robots have made the job a lot easier – and quicker. Agriculture is labor-intensive, and the commercial setting further increases the demands put on workers.

These robots are programmed to navigate fields and harvest crops. Additionally, they are also used for horticulture tasks such as weeding, pruning and spraying pesticides. They are also used to monitor the growth of plants.
